I was asked to write a little something about Angel Food Ministries for our church newspaper. Maybe it will benefit someone reading my blog, too.

Angel Food Ministries

Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit non-denominational program started in 1994 to provide financial and grocery relief to families across America. They also help to spread the gospel by placing tracts in each food order. Whether you’re needy, dealing with a tight budget (who isn’t), or wanting to help out another family in need, Angel Food Ministries can benefit you.
Sounds great, but how does it work? Orders are placed usually during the first week of each month and picked up during the last week or two of each month. Your order placed for either $25 or $30 will bring you on average, about $50 worth of groceries including meat, vegetables, side dishes and desserts. The food is said to last a family of four about one week, or a single elderly person up to one month! Menus are set and can be viewed online, or by calling your nearest Angel Food Ministries host sight. Currently, the nearest host sights in our area are in Geneva or Painesville.
Each menu features monthly additional specials that may be ordered after the minimum order of one regular $25 to $30 unit. Monthly specials usually feature spectacular meat combinations. For example, in January, one of the four specials offered features a 5 ½ pound steak and meat combo box. In this box you will receive 1.5 pounds of t-bone steaks, 1 pound of sirloin strip steak, 1 pound of lean hamburger steaks, and one pound of boneless center cut pork chops, and one pound of Italian sausage. Each special is usually around $18 to $20 each. The quality is comparable to what you’ll find in the average grocery store.
Don’t really have a need for the regular items but want one of the specials? Why not bless a neighbor that you’ve heard is a little extra strapped right now by leaving it on their doorstep? I’m willing to bet that the local food pantry would like to receive those extra items, too.
Orders must be paid for with cash, money order or food stamps. No proof of employment is necessary. You’ll need a medium sized box or plastic bin to pick up your food. Laundry baskets work great. Someone from the host sight will even help you out to your car. Orders for next month must be placed no later than January 7 and can be picked up on Saturday, January 26.
